Autumn

Part 1

The rain pounds on my window;

Cold winds of rain droplets, smashing across the glass;

Autumn in full swing;

Bringing with it the beauty of death;

And memories of times past;

My heart young and naive;

Easily loving;

Easily trusting;

How far it’s come;

Numb, and unfeeling it became;

Numb and unfeeling it’s become;

A heart of ice;

Cloaked in a case of darkness;

Part 2

But now and again;

I feel something aflutter;

A feeling of light and joy;

With it comes the possibility;

Of an impossibility;

Light escaping the dark vortex;

Coming from within;

To light my world;

Bright and warm as a summers day;

The beginning of a season of joy;

The thawing away of the freeze from winters past;

Giving life after the death, brought by autumn;

Spring shall come;

For after life, there is death;

And after death;

Life is certain.

Blanc

It’s a blank page;

An empty script;

A new leaf;

An empty slate;

It’s the hope we all have;

Of a new beginning;

To be better;

In the new chapter;

It’s the forgiveness;

Of sins past;

To never again;

Make the mistakes made;

And as I write;

This new script;

I brace myself;

For this new chapter;

For as I take the first step;

It lies ahead;

In all its emptiness;

Blank.

The art of writing is probably the easiest yet most time-consuming form of art one can venture into.

I have always admired writers for various reasons. First of all as someone who writes, well occasionally, and as someone who reads a lot across a wide range of genres like from poems to novels to biographies (basically any literary work I can lay my hands on), I have always been amazed at one characteristic which is common to almost all writers. This is the irony of the fact that they all have such a large imagination, and are still able to describe it in written form, in such intrinsic detail, that readers like you and I are able to dwell in the imagination of the writers, and see the world they created in their imagination from our own perspective and in our own minds just by reading the text form their written works. This is absolutely fascinating.

For a writer, especially those who write novels, coming up with the idea of what they want to write in their books is probably the least of their challenges. There are so many processes involved, and so many decisions have to be taken when writing one. For example they have to make critical decisions about so many things from deciding what genre they want their book is to be, “is it sci-fi or fantasy?,” to making such climaxing decisions which can alter the whole storyline of their books, such as killing off a character (hopefully it’s not a fan favourite like Ned Stark).

Also a writer when writing a novel will have to think like each and every character in the novel. In order to be able to tell the story in such a conflicted, but interesting manner, the writer will have to think from each characters point of view, and tell their story for them. They don’t usually see each character so judgingly as we the readers do, but just as an individual who has experienced or is experiencing events that will shape him/her to become the Noble hero or the brutal villain which the imagination of the author has destined him to later become.

The writing of the author can sometimes affect the vocabulary of a reader. Just imagine reading Macbeth, in the original Shakespearean English, and then speaking to someone afterwards. You’ll probably be trying so hard not to say to a friend you just met “hey how art thou today”. Writers can even create a whole new language of their own in their books, like the beautiful Elven language create by the famous English Author JRR Tolkien (author of Lord of the Rings trilogy among other interesting books). Sometimes they can even influence a whole culture, from inventing new sports like Quidditch, courtesy of our one and only J.K. Rowling, to even bringing up new names. The imagination of a writer is limitless, and has such great effects not just in the reader’s fantasies, but in reality, having positive and negative effects on society in general.

So if you don’t read much and you still think little of the power of the pen, just read one book and see for yourself how the power of a person’s imagination can unfold. And if you’re still wondering what the title of this article means, it’s Italian and translates as “The Insomniac Writes”.

Well what can I say, Slumber Eludes Me.

I remember the time my father taught me chess. On a Sunday afternoon, I sat cross legged at the center table in the drawing room, silently watching him put the pieces in place. “This is the queen, and this is the king”, he said, holding up the pieces. My eyes widened. I reached for them, running my fingers gently along the piece, examining it closely as he set up the board.

He went on to explain the rules to me. “The aim is to protect the king at all costs” he said, showing me how the different pieces moved across the chessboard. It was the most beautiful game I’d seen. I stopped listening. All I saw was a story. A story of two kingdoms, equal in strength, competing for supremacy.

I saw a battle begin before my eyes. The pieces charged towards each other, falling by the dozen as…
